Study- Global Education

Global Education centers around the idea of helping students develop the four domains of Global Competence. Globally competent students have the knowledge and skills to:
  • Investigate the World- Globally competent students are aware, curious, and interested in learning about the world and how it works.
  • Recognize Perspectives- Globally competent students recognize that they have a particular perspective, and that others may or may not share it.
  • Communicate Ideas- Globally competent students can effectively communicate, verbally and non-verbally, with diverse audiences.
  • Take Action- Globally competent students have the skills and knowledge to not just learn about the world, but also to make a difference in the world.
Check out the Asian Society for LOTS of great information about global education.

Teachers already have so so so much to do. Why do we need to "add" global education to our already packed plate? Our world is getting smaller and smaller. Our classrooms are becoming more and more diverse. Through the internet (social media, youtube) are students are exposed to people from all over the world. We need to take the time to teach students interact and communicate with others in a respectful manner and to appreciate each person's different story.

I encourage you to check out The Danger of a Single Story TED Talk by novelist Chimamanda Adichie. She warns how "if we hear only a single story about another person or country, we risk a critical misunderstanding." Continue reading this page to learn how global education isn't something to "add" separately, but instead something to incorporate seamlessly into what you are already teaching.

Check out this Global Education Checklist by Fred Czarra. It "is a practical tool that teachers, curriculum developers, school administrators, and state education agency staff can use to gauge their work within the realm of global/international education."

Profile of a Globally Aware Student

One great resource is Teacher's Toolbox which is full of global education lessons. Sections include:

  • Cultural StudiesComprehensive lesson plans that explore generalizations & stereotypes, culture & values, and observations & judgments, with the goal of generating further dialogue in the classroom.
  • Global AwarenessInteractive activities to help students learn about cultures around the world, using methods like a fun word search to incorporate beginner foreign language learning.
  • Social ActivismLesson plans to explore the effect of social networking and other factors on influential change-making initiatives such as the #saynotoracism and #bringbackourgirls campaigns.
  • Intercultural LearningLearning activities to help students understand diverse cultural beliefs and think critically about cultural awareness, teaching the value of interacting with people from diverse backgrounds.
Another place to find globalized lesson plans is the NEA Foundation. The lessons are created by their Global Learning Fellows and cover a variety of topics for multiple grade levels.
